The City of Wilmington is found in New Castle County, Delaware. The city had a population totaling 199,827 as of July 2016. It is the county seat for New Castle County.
The City of Wilmington covers an area of approximately 19 square miles (50 km2). It is bordered on the north by Newark Bay; Brandywine Creek on the south; Christina Lake on the west; Claymont to its east.
Wilmington is part of the Philadelphia-Camden-Delaware Metropolitan Statistical Area.
The University of Delaware is located in Wilmington, Delaware. It is one of three state universities within Delaware. The university enrolls about 16,000 students each semester and is known for its academic excellence and athletic programs.
Wilmington is also home of the International Center of Photography, which was founded in 1936, as well as the National Museum of American Art that was founded in 1960.
Wilmington is the birthplace of author Stephen King. He spent his childhood in Leeds, Maine, just outside Portland.
Wilmington is served by Wilmington/Newark Airport, which serves commercial flights. Amtrak trains stop here daily.
